Markus Huemer

Markus Huemer (1968 Linz, Austria) lives and works in Berlin.

Interested in the question of presentation and representation, reality and perception, Huemer creates parallel words and observes how they communicate using extremely pared-down products which seem as flat as cutouts, with colors that appear reduced to a minimum in order to spread what appears to be something recognizable before us and, at the same time, to point out to us the deceptiveness of what we see. The paradox of painting without colors and creating non-existing images has become central in his work. In Huemer’s oeuvre, the relation between the paintings and the media works can be described as correlative, since, there is no distinction between real, virtual, and painted worlds. In most cases, the focus is in fact on the internal reality of computers and the Internet, and how the codes, and algorithms function. Huemer reflects on the suitability for art of the digital media and what constitutes the inclusive digital parameters of painting in relation to its manifested material presence. Something also fundamental to his work is the investigation of language as an starting point on his deliberations on perception, communication and understanding.
